1.是，对，表示准许 approve：许～ xǔkě permit; allow/ 认～ rènkě approve/ 不加～否 bù jiā kě fǒu neither approve nor deny ［可以 -yǐ］1.表示允许 may (indicating approval)：～～，你去吧 Kěyǐ, nǐ qù bɑ. Ok, you may go there. 2.适宜，能 can; may：现在～～穿棉衣了 Xiànzài kěyǐ chuān miányī le. You may put on your cotton-padded clothes now./ 马铃薯～～当饭吃 Mǎlíngshǔ kěyǐ dāng fàn chī. Potatoes can serve as food. 3.过甚，程度深 terrible; awful：这几天冷得真～～ Zhè jǐ tiān lěng de zhēn kěyǐ. 7.表示疑问 expressing doubt：你～知道 Nǐ kě zhīdào? Do you know it?/ 这话～是真的 Zhè huà kě shì zhēn de? Is that true?
8.和“岂”字义近 (meaning similar to "qǐ" when used to ask a rhetoric question)：～不是吗 Kě bù shì mɑ? Isn't it so?/ ～不就糟了吗 Kě bù jiù zāo le mɑ? Wouldn't it be a mess?
9.大约 about：年～三十许 nián kě sānshí xǔ at the age of about thirty/ 长～六米 cháng kě liù mǐ about six metres long
