guì MC kwejH

1. cinnamon tree (Cinnamomum cassia, C.
pedunculatum), medium to tall subtropical evergreen tree, assoc. in lit. with longevity, immortality, and reclusion; part of the laurel family, having slightly fragrant bark and white odorless flowers; the cinnamon’s tall trunk was sometimes used as building material, but no part of the tree was used medicinally nor was its spice used through med. times. When ref. is to fragrant wood, aromatic leaves, or inconspicuous and nearly odorless flowers in spring or summer, it is to the cinnamon. Refs. to 肉桂 ròuguì, “fleshy gui,” are also to the cinnamon, and the legendary gui-tree in the moon is the cinnamon.
The phrase “cinnabar gui,” 丹桂 dānguì, may ref. to a red-barked variety of cinnamon, but more often signifies the osmanthus (see next). N.B. Do not translate gui as “cassia,” which as the name of a genus belongs to a quite different family.
2. osmanthus, sweet-olive tree (Osmanthus fragrans), small evergreen tree of warm to temperate climes, with highly fragrant white or yellowish-white flowers that bloom in autumn; when ref. is made to the gui’s redolence or its autumn-blooming, it is the osmanthus that is meant; often used in private gardens. Also assoc.
in lit. with reclusion, esp. Budd. reclusion. The phrase “cinnabar gui,” 丹桂 dānguì, usu. ref. to a red-flowered variety of osmanthus.
