释义 | »» 亦 yì MC yek 1. occurring before a VB or VB-phrase, or before noun predicates in nominal sentences, refers reflexively to the topic or SUBJ of the sentence, with a limiting sense, i.e. specifically in regard to that topic or SUBJ: for his (her, its, their) part; e.g. 王亦不好士 wáng yì bùhào shì, The king for his part is not fond of officials; 此亦飛之至也 c. yì fēi zhī zhì yě, This for its part is the ultimate form of flying. a. for his (her, its, their part) > the one or the case in question > “in this (that) case”; e.g. 若其未有君亦圖之 ruò qí wèiyǒu jūn yì tú zhī If by chance you do not yet have this, my lord in that case ought to plan for it. b. for his (her, its, their) part > the one in particular > the one also > “also”, “too”, “besides”; e.g. 此亦聖人之過也 c. yì shèngrén zhī guò yě, This too is an error of the sage; 大言亦然 dàyán yì rán, Great speech is also like that. (This sense can be difficult to distinguish from 1.) c. “also,” “too” used to emphasize an extreme case > “too,” “still”; e.g. 雖舜紂亦不能去民之好義 suī shùn zhòu yì bùnéng qù mín zhī hàoyì Even Shun and Zhou, they too were unable to eradicate the people’s preference for Propriety; 寡人雖死亦無悔焉 guǎrén suī sǐ yì wú huǐ yān Even should I, the Solitary One, die, still I will have no remorse in regard to it. 2. occurring before a VB or VB-phrase, restricts the reference to the particular person, thing, or event in question (often reinforced by a suitable rhetorical sentence coda): this one > just, only; e.g. 亦有仁義而已 yì yǒu rényì éryǐ, I have just Humaneness and Propriety [to offer] and that’s all; 亦不用于耕耳 yì bùyòng yú gēng ěr, They only did not apply [their efforts] to plowing, that’s all. 3. used after the negative GP bù 不 and before a scalar predicate adjective, indicates that the quality or sense of the predicate adjective does not apply to the SUBJ, yet does not allow for attributing the negative or opp. quality to the SUBJ; in other words, allows for a neutral judgment; e.g. 不亦大 bùyìdà, is not great (but is not necessarily small, cf. 不大 bùdà, is small); 不亦善乎 bùyìshàn hū, is it not good? (but not necessarily bad?, cf. 不善乎 bùshàn hū, is it bad?).
