For the ruler, who ceremonially faced south, left was east, direction of the rising sun and more auspicious than west. In office titles prefaced with “left” and “right,” the occupant of the “left” appointment usu. took precedence. But left was often the inferior side, → 3 below. 2. cmpd., 左右 zuǒyòu, left and right, to the left and right, esp. those to the left and right of the ruler, close advisers, attendants and acolytes; also, all around; also, when used with number, approx.; also, aid and assist, be at one’s elbow; also, control, command; also, indirect term (hence honorific) for addressee of a letter. 3. gauche, improper, unfitting; heterodox; deviant, sinister; e.g. 左衽 zuǒrèn, leftward-fastening lappet, worn by foreigners (Chinese lappets fastened rightward) > by metonymy, those who are uncouth, barbaric. a. inferior, place in inferior position, esp. demote an official in rank; e.g. 左遷 zuǒqiān, demoted and transferred [to a lesser position]. 4. ⦿ 佐 zuǒ, assist; guarantee.
