(Dao.) by synecdoche, elixir of transcendence or immortality, because cinnabar was one of chief ingredients in mineral-based concoctions; also, often used as adjective indicating connection of item with Dao. transcendence. 2. cinnabar-red, vermilion; e.g. 丹青 dānqīng, red and green, i.e. painting (< pigments made from cinnabar and malachite); 丹書 dānshū, “cinnabar document,” written with pigment made from cinnabar, usu. ref. special importance, e.g. heaven-sent text, order of emperor, Dao. esoteric text. a. sun-flushed, burning-red, esp. in scenic descriptions. 3. bare, exposed; unfeigned, authentic; e.g. 丹心 dānxīn, one’s true heart (equiv. 赤心 chìxīn). 4. 丹桂 dānguì, depending on context, may ref. red-flowered osmanthus (Osmanthus fragrans), red-barked cinnamon (species of Cinnamomum cassia), or either as associated with Daoist immortality.
