1. marks a noun or VB-phrase as being exactly or precisely what is meant: exactly, precisely, just (so), the very; e.g. 即不忍其觳觫 jí bùrěn qí húsù, It was precisely that I could not bear its quivering in fear; 進即兩楹間 jìn jí liǎngyíng jiān, advance to a spot precisely between the two posts; (Budd.) 色即是空, 空即是色 sè jíshì kōng, kōng jíshì sè, “form is exactly emptiness, emptiness is exactly form,” famous phrase from Heart Sutra.
2. introduces conditional clause: if; e.g. 即受魚必有下人之色 jí shòu yú bì yǒu xiàrén zhī sè, If I had accepted the fish there inevitably would have been a reaction among the underlings; 即不幸而不起此病 jí bùxìng ér bùqǐ cǐbìng, if unfortunately you do not recover from this affliction; 即使 jíshǐ, if it came about that, if it were that . . .
3. to take up, take over, assume; approach; e.g. 即位 jíwèi, accede to the throne.
4. (ADV) forthwith, instantly, immediately, promptly.
a. (med.) preceding a noun: at the very (time, place); e.g. 即今 jíjīn, 即日 jírì, right now, at this moment; 即事 jíshì, on the spot, at the scene (esp. in poem titles).
