A composite animal, described as having the front torso of a “unicorn” (lin 麟) and hind parts of a deer, a serpent’s neck and fish’s tail, the markings of a “dragon” (long 龍) and carapace of a turtle, a swallow’s bill and chicken’s beak, with feathers of all hues. Chief among feathered creatures, its charisma causes other birds to flock to it; one of the “four numinous animals” (siling 四靈). a. emblematic of imperial influence and dignity. b. ominous of good fortune and sageliness.
