Polished and shaped for all manner of sacred ritual objects as well as objects of utility and pleasure. a. having the beauty or luster of jade; e.g. 玉容 yùróng, jade[-white] countenance. b. respectful epithet of items associated with the gods or the emperor; e.g. (Dao.) 玉清 yùqīng, Jade Clarity, name of the highest of the 3 heavens of “Clarity”; 玉牒 yùdié, jade tablets, inscribed and used by emperor in the fengshan 封禪 sacrifices; also, genealogical records of emperor; also, (Dao.) registers of divinities; (Dao.) 玉女 yùnǚ, jade maidens, celestial subordinates who often serve as guardians of sacred scriptures or attendants of major female divinities. 2. as a color word, always indicates lustrous or pure white (N.B. never green); hence has symbolic wuxing associations with the west, metal, autumn, the moon, etc.; e.g. (med.) 玉環 yùhuán, jade ring or 玉輪 yùlún, jade wheel, both metaphorically ref. the moon. 3. general term for fine ornamental stone, such as marble.
