| 释义 | »» 玄 xuán MC hwen 1. the quality of permitting the passage of light but without making visible what is on the other side, translucent, semi-transparent, e.g. the sky as a medium through which light passes from beyond it (N.B. not “dark” as aphotic, cf. 冥 míng dark-cast, darkling). 2. not able to be fully known or described in detail, hinting at something beyond what is apparent > mysterious, mystery; abstruse, recondite, arcane, dark to the mind; inexplicable. a. often used as syn. of 道 dào, the Way, “the mysterium”; e.g. 玄風 xuánfēng, a manner comporting with the mystery [of the Dao], exhibiting a vogue for the “mysterious”; 玄學 xuánxúe, “abstruse learning,” “the learning of the mysterious,” mode of thought and discourse developed in the 3rd c. and remaining influential through the early 5th c., making much reference to the “3 texts of mystery” (sanxue 三玄), i.e. Yijing, Laozi, Zhuangzi. b. to deepen, darken; make mysterious. 3. as color, sloe or sloe-black (mainly an early usage). 4. dim, dun; darkling; murky, opaque. a. associated with heaven, as “yellow” (huang 黃) is with earth, hence 玄黃 xuánhuáng, the realms of the dark and the yellow > heaven and earth. b. common descriptor in Dao. esoteric terms, e.g. 玄鄉 xuánxiāng, “murky parish,” the kidneys; 玄池 xuánchí, “murky pond,” the bladder; 玄元 xuányuán, “mysterious prime,” state of the original undifferentiated qi 氣 of heaven and earth; also abb. form of 玄元皇帝 xuányuán huángdì, “Illustrious Thearch of the Mysterious Prime,” title of canonized Laozi, bestowed in 666. c. syn. of black as symbolic color of north in wuxing correspondences; e.g. 玄武 xuánwǔ, “dusky warrior,” emblematic animal of the north usu. portrayed as snake wrapped round a tortoise; also, the northern quadrant of the sky. 5. 玄枵 xuánxiāo, “Murky Hollow,” one of the 12 Jupiter stations, incl. the lunar lodgings 女 nǚ (“Woman”), 虛 xū (“Barrens”), and 危 wēi (“Steep Roof”).
