定义

人口再生产指人口的出生和死亡的世代更替过程，从而使人口种的繁衍的反复循环过程能持续不断地进行。社会再生产包括物质资料的再生产和人口的再生产两个方面。物质资料的再生产是人口再生产的基础，只有不断地进行物质资料的再生产，人类才能生存和延续。人口再生产是物质资料在生产得以不断进行的条件。人口具有生物属性和社会属性两个方面，人口再生产的过程是生物过程和社会过程再生产的统一。人口再生产的生物过程，就是人口不断出生、成长、衰老、死亡的生理过程。人口再生产的社会过程，就是人口再生产通过一定的婚姻关系、家庭关系来实现的过程。人口再生产有其惯性，在一个长期不断增长的人口群体中都具有一种继续增长的趋势，而长期不断缩减的人口群体中则具有一种继续缩减的趋势。这是因为人口再生产惯性来源于人口年龄结构，过去人口增长速度快，人口年龄结构就轻，未来育龄人群大，反之亦然（刘复之，1993：82）。从人类社会发展史来看，人口再生产的历史发展过程存在三种类型：一是粗放型，出现在前资本主义社会和资本主义社会发展初期，其特点是高出生率、高死亡率，低人口自然增长率；二是过渡型，最早于十八世纪末、十九世纪初在英国开始出现，一些发展中国家大多在第二次世界大战后才出现，其特点是高出生率、低死亡率和高人口自然增长率；三是世代更替缓慢类型，从二十世纪五十年代起到现在，许多发达国家和部分发展中国家均属于这一类型，其特点是低出生率、低死亡率和低人口自然增长率，人口的平均寿命长，世代更替逐渐缓慢（吴传钧，1988：11）。人口再生产类型随着生产力发展而发生变化，依次更替，有低级向高级转变，不以人们的意志为转移。
