定义

道德境界是指指人们通过接受道德教育和进行道德修养所达到的道德觉悟程度以及所形成的道德品质状况和精神情操水平。道德境界是客观存在、人们都会具有的，只不过在境界高低上有着区别而已。它的高低取决于人们所处的地位和自身的道德修养。如“大公无私”、“先公后私”、“公私兼顾”、“自私自利”，就是人们对不同道德境界的通俗概括。现阶段人们的道德境界大致可分为四个层次：（1）自私自利的境界，这种道德境界属于私有制社会关系的产物。生活在这个境界中的人，认为自私自利是人的本性，把个人利益放在高于一切、大于一切的地位，为了个人利益而不顾一切，甚至不择手段地损害他人利益和社会利益。（2）先私后公的境界。这种道德境界来源于小生产者的道德残余影响，资产阶级 “合理利己主义”本质上也属于这种道德境界。处于这一境界的人，遇到问题先考虑个人利益，在与他人、与集体、与社会交往中斤斤计较个人得失，把个人利益放在第一位。（3）先公后私的境界，先公后私的道德境界也可称为社会主义的道德境界。这种道德境界的特点是关心社会整体利益比关心个人利益为重、关心他人利益比关心自己利益为重，在谋求社会公共利益发展中，谋求个人的正当利益。（4）大公无私的道德境界。这种境界是共产主义道德品质的最高境界。处于这种境界的人，毫不利己，专门利人，对工作极端负责任，对人民极端热忱，他们心里想着的全是人民、集体、社会和共产主义事业同时，道德境界一经形成，在或长或短的时期内，是具有相对稳定性的。因此，每一个人在道德修养过程中，应当经常客观地估量自己的道德境界，并自觉意识到这种境界的性质，及时改变努力方向（孙玉霞，2009：107-108）。
