Edging

定义

敦煌装饰图案的一种。从广义上讲是一种较为简单的反复多次排列的条形装饰图案，用来衬托、美化各种艺术品的边沿装饰。狭义指壁画、建筑、桌、台、龛、服饰、故事画、人字坡、藻井、佛像之间用来隔开画面的各种长条形装饰图案，如绘画的边框，所以简称为边饰。

It is a type of decorative pattern as found in Dunhuang. In its broad sense, it refers to simple and repetitive strip-type patterns, a marginal decoration used to highlight and beautify the edging of various artworks. In its narrow sense, it includes various bar or band patterns used to separate murals, architecture, tables, stages, niches, costumes, narrative paintings, gable ceilings, lanterndecke ceilings, and Buddha statues. They function like borders on paintings, and are called ‘‘edging’’ for short.
