Statues of the Buddha’s Asceticism: statues depicting Shakyamuni Buddha’s ascetic period during his quest to overcome worldly sufferings. Statues in this category follow certain established artistic conventions in depicting the Buddha’s robes, postures, and facial expressions, and in its position and placement with surrounding statues. These statues, combined with statues of the Buddha’s renunciation, Enlightenment, and Dharma teaching, make up the four statue groups reflecting major events at the four distinct stages of the Buddha’s life.
