自我复制是生命运动的基本形式和基本表现。古希腊时期，著名的哲学家亚里士多德曾把运动分为四类：本质上的运动，如增加、减少；性质上的运动，如冷热交替；位置上的运动，如前前后后、左左右右等。亚里士多德虽然已经把生命运动的四种基本类型阐述清楚，但他不能把握到运动的辩证发展形式，即生命运动从低级到高级的发展的原因以及各种运动形式的相互转化。到了近代，机械唯物主义者在解释生命运动的基本形式时，仅仅把生命运动看作是机械的、热的、电的、化学的运动或机械的位置移动，而不能理解生命运动的多样性。唯心主义者则把生命归结为“活力”、“活素”的活动。此后，恩格斯根据当时生物学研究成果，在《反杜林论》中提出：“生命是蛋白体的存在方式，这种存在方式本质上就在于这些蛋白体的化学组成部分的不断的自我更新。”并指出：“生命的起源必然是通过化学的途径实现的。”（《马克思恩格斯选集（第三卷）》：422-413）至此，恩格斯科学地指出了生命运动的基本方式和体现形式，即生命具有自我更新、自我复制的基本功能。今天，我们仍然将生命视为主要由核酸、蛋白质大分子组成的，以细胞为最基本单位的复合体系的存在方式。而生命在同体外环境进行的物质、能量、信息的交换过程中，能够实现自我更新、自我保存、自我复制、自我组织。生命现象主要有：新陈代谢、自我复制、生长、发育、运动、遗传、变异、感应等。
