浙江上虞人。宣统元年(1909)补参事官兼京师大学堂(今北京大学)农科监督。1911年辛亥革命爆发，与王国维等避居日本，从事学术研究。1919年归国，住天津。1921年，他参与、发起并组织 “敦煌经籍辑存会” 。宣统元年，力促学部电令甘督查封石室，将所余遗书悉数解送京师。撰有多种敦煌学论著，尤其注重对中国传统四部书写本的研究和整理。

A native of Shangyu, Zhejiang Province. In 1909 he became a counselor of the Qing Dynasty government, and the head of the agriculture department at the Imperial University of Peking. He fled to Japan—with Wang Guowei—when the Xinhai Revolution took place in 1911, and dedicated himself to academic research. In 1919 he returned to China and from then resided in Tianjin. In 1921 he participated in the founding of the Society for the Compilation and Preservation of Dunhuang Manuscripts. In 1909 he urged the education ministry to telegraph the governor of Gansu to tell him to seal up the secret chamber at the Mogao Grottoes, and deliver all remaining manuscripts to the capital. He wrote many books in the field of Dunhuang studies and he particularly focused on the study of the Chinese “Four Books”.
