Sutra Ilustration Paintings (Jingbian Illustrations)

亦称变或变相，佛画种类之一。就广义而言你，凡依据佛经绘制之画，皆可称之为“变”。然今之“经变”，既有别于本生故事画、因缘故事画、佛传故事画，又有别与单身尊像，专指将某一部乃至几部有关佛经之主要内容组成首尾完整、主次分明的大画（如涅槃经变）。

Sutra Illustration Paintings: a category of Buddhist paintings, sutra paintings (jingbian illustrations) are also known as bian or bianxiang. In a broad sense, any painting based on Buddhist scriptures can be referred to as bian. In modern times, jingbian illustrations are defined as a specific category different from paintings of Jataka tales, Nidana stories of causation, Buddhist narrative stories, or figure paintings of the Buddha. Nowadays the term specifically refers to a gigantic illustration of the main content of a single sutra or of several relevant sutras, made by sorting out primary and secondary scenes and arranging different episodes coherently (such as the Nirvana Jingbian).
