定义

人的意识、思维活动和一般心理状态。与“肉体本性”相对。古希腊罗马哲学中，斯多亚学派强调人的精神本性、“精神健全”和“精神安宁”。以后许多哲学家都以人的精神本性为研究对象。黑格尔是研究精神本性的集大成者，他从客观唯心主义立场出发，运用辩证法来研究分析精神发展的历史过程，即意识¾¾自我意识¾¾理性¾¾绝对精神的发展过程。“在黑格尔那里，一方面，自我意识只是人类精神自身形成发展过程中处于意识之后、理性之前的一个特定阶段和意识形态；但是，另一方面，自我意识却恰好是人类精神的一种无遮蔽的状态，在此集中了人类精神自身的各种矛盾冲突，并由此将人类精神的本性暴露无遗”（章忠民，1999：45）。马克思和恩格斯高度评价其研究成果。马克思青年时代对伊壁鸠鲁关于精神的自由和独立的观点产生很大兴趣(见《关于伊壁鸠鲁哲学的笔记》)。1842年初在《评普鲁士最近的书报检查令》中进一步阐发自由是精神的本性的观点，并以此抨击普鲁士政府的书报检查制度。随着唯物主义历史观确立，1846年在和恩格斯合写的《德意志意识形态》中扬弃了肉体本性和精神本性的提法，用社会存在和社会意识等来作出科学的说明（金炳华，冯契，2001：675）。
