Mogao Cave 156 is a donor cave commissioned during the Late Tang (AD 755-763) by Zhang Yichao, military governor of the Guiyi Circuit. In the niche in the cave's western wall is a sculpture of Maitreya Buddha, whose head is damaged. Dressed in a kasaya with U-shaped folds, the Buddha is sitting on a throne with his body upright and feet on two lotus flowers. It is representative of Maitreya Buddha sculptures popular in the Late Tang.
