Standing Musicians

立部伎，唐代宫廷宴乐之一种。与坐部伎相对。在堂下表演。演出规模大，场面宏伟豪华。舞者多至180人，少则64人。表演“立部伎”节目的艺人技术水平不如“坐部伎”高。习“坐部伎”不成，改习“立部伎”，习“立部伎”又不成，则改习“雅乐”。

Standing musicians, as opposed to sitting musicians, were one type of court music and dance during the Tang Dynasty. A larger number of players took part in the performance below the platform in the hall, making the scene grand and magnificent. The number of dancers could be as large as 180, while at least 64 dancers minimum were necessary. Performing skills required for standing musicians were probably not as high as those for “sitting musicians”. If performers failed to qualify as sitting musicians they could go on to become standing musicians, and if they failed yet to become standing musicians, they could still train to become “court music players.”
