定义

社会总资本又称“社会资本”。资本主义社会中互相联系的所有个别资本的总和。在资本主义条件下，所有个别资本都是互相分离、互相独立的，各自通过自己的循环和周转，增殖自身的价值。但它们又是互相联系、互相依存的，因为任何一个企业的资本家和工人，都需要别的企业供给生产资料和消费品，同时又需要别的企业或资本家和工人购买它的产品。全部个别资本这样有机地结合起来，就构成社会资本。社会资本的运动是由各个个别资本的循环交错形成的。它同个别资本的运动一样，采取商品资本、生产资本和货币资本三种形式，在形式变换过程中增殖其价值。两者所不同的是：个别资本的运动只包括生产消费过程和资本流通，不包括个人消费过程和一般商品流通，而社会总资本的循环却包括那种不属于单个资本循环范围内的商品流通，即包括那些不形成资本的商品的流通（社会总资本.via：http://kns.cnki.net/kns/brief/Default_Result.aspx?code=CRPD&kw=%e7%a4%be%e4%bc%9a%e6%80%bb%e8%b5%84%e6%9c%ac&korder=0&sel=1）。
马克思在分析社会总资本时，或者说马克思在定义社会总资本这个概念时，是从单个资本的运动开始的，从单个资本过渡到社会总资本。“每一单个资本只是社会总资本中一个独立的、可以说赋有个体生命的部分。社会资本的运动，由社会资本的各个独立部分的运动的总和，即各个单个资本的周转的总和构成。……单个资本的形态变化，它的周转，是社会资本循环中的一个环节。”社会总资本的运动过程，或者说每个单个资本运动的总和，“既包含生产消费和作为其中介的形式转化，也包括个人消费和作为其中介的形式转化或交换。”这是从社会角度考察资本与单独考察某一个资本时的区别。表面看经济是由许许多多单个资本的活动，实际上它们只是社会总资本的内部运动。“因此，总括起来成为社会资本的各个单个资本的循环，也就是说，就社会资本的总体来考察的循环，不仅包括资本的流通，而且也包括一般的商品流通。后者本来只能由两部分构成：1、资本本身的循环；2、进入个人消费的商品的循环，也就是工人用工资，资本家用剩余价值购买的那些商品的循环。”（马克思，2004：390-391）
