理论基础指一事物产生或发展的基本理论依据。就理论和实践的关系看，任何一种真正的理论，都具有三重基本内涵：其一，它以概念的逻辑体系的形式为人们提供历史地发展着的世界图景，从而规范人们对世界的自我理解和相互理解；其二，它以思维逻辑和概念框架的形式为人们提供历史地发展着的思维方式，从而规范人们如何去把握、描述和解释世界；其三，它以理论所具有的普遍性、规律性和理想性为人们提供历史地发展着的价值观念，从而规范人们的思想与行为（孙正聿，2009：1）。理论以其这些特性，指导着实践，构成实践活动的理论基础。如，中国特色社会主义道路的理论基础，首先是马克思列宁主义、毛泽东思想，最直接的理论基础是包括邓小平理论、“三个代表”重要思想以及科学发展观等重大战略思想在内的中国特色社会主义理论体系。中国特色社会主义理论体系有着独特的体系构成、理论框架、哲学基础，指导着中国社会的发展道路。
