浙江海宁人，辛亥革命爆发，与罗振玉等人避居日本，致力于古史研究。1925年任清华研究院教授。1927年6月3日自沉于颐和园昆明湖。在敦煌学方面，与罗振玉，董康等积极校理，研究敦煌写卷，撰有《唐写本敦煌县户籍跋》等，内容涉及制度史、宗教史、俗文学、西北史地、韵书等敦煌学的许多方面。

A native of Haining, Zhejiang Province. He fled to Japan with Luo Zhenyu at the start of the Xinhai Revolution in 1911, where he dedicated himself to the study of the ancient history of China. In 1925 he was appointed a professor at Tsinghua University. On June 3rd, 1927, he committed suicide by drowning himself in the Kunming Lake at the Summer Palace. In the field of Dunhuang studies, he collated and studied Dunhuang manuscripts with Luo Zhenyu and Dong Kang, and he wrote papers including A Postscript on Tang Dynasty Manuscripts of Dunhuang Household Registers. These papers involved many aspects of Dunhuang studies including the history of religion, secular literature, the history and geography of northwestern China, and rhyming dictionaries.
