Fanbai (Hymns and Praises)

定义

①僧徒咏唱的赞颂佛或菩萨的短歌。因其传自梵土，故称“梵呗”、“赞呗”。②在佛教仪式上举唱梵呗的僧徒。③唐代译经道场置有“梵呗”一名，为译场九职之一。

(1) A short chant sung by Buddhist followers for extolling Buddha or Bodhisattva and is known in Chinese as zanbai (praising chant ) or fanbai (literally “Brahma chant”) since it was introduced to China from ancient India. (2) It refers to the monk in charge of chanting fanbai praises in a sutra-preaching ceremony. (3) It is one of the nine officials assigned in workshops for scripture translation in the Tang Dynasty.
