指被以形象为中介的人与人之间的社会关系组成的景观包围着的社会。法国学者居伊·德波1967年在《景观社会》中提出。“景观”是德波学说体系中特别重视一个独特的概念，他在自己著作中对这个概念并未直接给予定义，而是通过研究性的讨论来背景性地指认其中概括的内容。我国学者张一兵曾解释说，“景观”意思本身是“去看”和“被看”。在德波看来，“景观”是新的社会批判理论的关键词，这是指一种被展现出来的可视的景象，也意指一种主体性的、有意识的表演和做秀。德波借其概括自己看到的当代资本主义社会新特质，即一种被展现的景观性，它是当代社会存在的主导性本质。利用“景观社会”这个概念，德波透视当代西方社会境况，由此展开了他所提出的社会批判理论中的“意识形态”批判。（张涵，2009:126）。德波对景观社会的批判，在思想史的意义上继承了马克思对资本主义社会商品生产的批判。在马克思那里，资本主义社会的商品生产以物的关系替代了人与人的社会关系，这是商品拜物教的现实基础。但在这一批判中，商品还体现为一个具体存在的“物”，是看得见、摸得着的。而在德波的景观社会批判中，商品的“物”性被商品本身的“表现”——即景观所替代。原来表现为“物”的人与人的关系，现在被屏幕上的影像所中介，商品从其“物”的规定中抽离出来，商品的影像统治了一切，这就是景观社会（仰海峰，2008：9）。
