The Story of Monk Huiyuan of Mount Lushan

唐五代话本。故事纯属虚构，叙说远公出家为僧，专念《涅槃经》，后被寿州贼首白庄卖给崔相公为奴，改名善庆。远公弟子云庆把远公所作《涅槃经疏抄》传授给道安。道安在东都福光寺讲《涅槃经》时，远公随崔相公入寺，与道安论难取胜，说出自己的真实身份，被皇帝迎入宫中，数年后，他坚决要求归山，最后归依上界。

It is a totally fictional huaben story from the Tang and Five Dynasties. According to the story, Huiyuan (Yuan Gong) becomes a monk at a young age and is dedicated to the recitation and study of the Nirvana Sutra, but later is abducted by Bai Zhuang in Shouzhou Prefecture and sold as a servant to a man surnamed Cui; Huiyuan’s name is then changed to Shan Qing. Huiyuan’s work, Commentaries on the Nirvana Sutra, is taught by one of his disciples, Yunqing, to the later prominent monk Dao’an. When Dao’an is preaching the Nirvana Sutra in Fuguang Temple in Dongdu, Huiyuan happens to be there accompanying Cui, and he prevails in a debate with Dao’an on the sutra. Then Huiyuan’s identity is revealed. After that, the emperor invites him to the palace to preach the Buddhist dharma. Several years later, Huiyuan leaves the palace with great determination and returns to Mount Lushan where he ultimately becomes an immortal.
