和谐是“对立事物之间在一定的条件下、具体、动态、相对、辩证的统一，是不同事物之间相同相成、相辅相成、相反相成、互助合作、互利互惠、互促互补、共同发展的关系”（和谐.via： http://book.duxiu.com/EncyDetail.jsp?dxid=900012978627&d=4769F65636E1DDC059FA0917DA2D2DC0）。这是辩证唯物主义和谐观的基本观点。 在西方，有许多“和谐”的理念 ，如毕达哥拉斯认为，“整个天就是一个和谐”；赫拉克利特认为，和谐产生于对立的东西；文艺复兴后许多思想家都把“和谐”视为重要的哲学范畴；马克思则真正把握了“和谐”理念，提倡社会和谐。在中国古代，可从以下几方面理解“和谐”理念，“和而不同”、事物的对立统一、人与自然的和谐等。和谐是指对自然和人类社会变化、发展规律的认识，是人们所追求的美好事物和处事的价值观、方法论。和谐中包含的相同是相合相成、共同发展，而不是相互相毁、同归于尽；和谐中包含的不同是相辅相成、互助合作的不同，而不是相异相毁、相互损害。和谐中包含的对立是相反相成、互促互补的对立，而不是相反相毁、相互倾轧。和谐并非取消对立，而是要求除去破坏和谐的对立。对于和谐中的对立可以作以下理解：向后登往前走的对立是相反相成，消耗体力的锻炼可以增强体力，失败乃成功之母，生于忧患而死于安逸，否定的意见使肯定的意见深化和完善，艰难险阻造就人才等等，这种相反相成的对立永远需要（和谐.via： http://book.duxiu.com/EncyDetail.jsp?dxid=900010665317&d=0E64A7F9773B676183918CC827529CC4）。
