Transformation Texts (Bianwen)

俗文学讲唱故事类作品体裁之一，亦可简称“变”。变文是配合一种故事性图画(变相)演出的讲唱文学底本。边说边唱边引导观看图画，说白叙述故事，唱词加深印象。

Bianwen, also abbreviated as bian, is a genre of vernacular stories and narrative songs in Dunhuang folk literature. Bianwen were intended to accompany sutra illustration paintings (or bianxiang). Storytellers guided the audience to look at the illustrations while narrating the story, impressing the audience with singing.
