敦煌壁画中表现佛教传说与传播历史的壁画，多取材于对各个高僧、圣迹的记载和《法显传》、《大唐西域记》、《西域传》等，属于传说和著者所见的遗物（如圣迹、圣像）等结合或附会的产物。

Paintings of Buddhist Historical Sites and Events: mainly illustrate tales and historical events in the spread of Buddhism based on records of eminent monks and Buddhist relics, including A Record of Buddhist Kingdoms, The Great Tang Records on the Western Regions and “Traditions of the Western Regions” in the Book of Han. Therefore, the paintings are a combination of relevant legends and relics (including remains or icons) as heard and seen by the authors.
