史载，唐代著名画家周昉，始将观音画在山水之中，使其观音的形象和所处环境都更加优美，后人则多所模写仿照，以至流传不绝，遂成观音的主要画式之一，称为水月观音。

Water and Moon Guanyin Bodhisattva: according to historical records, Zhoufang, a famous painter of the Tang Dynasty, was the first to draw Guanyin Bodhisattva amid mountains and waters, which rendered the image of the Bodhisattva and the surrounding landscape more elegant and refined. This practice was followed successively by later generations of painters and thus become one of the major styles in depicting Guanyin Bodhisattva.
