Praising Verse (Zan)

定义

通“讃”。①诗赞。敦煌讲唱文学作品中用以吟咏的五言或七言韵文。②以颂扬人物为主旨的文体。③佛经文体之一。亦称“呗”、“梵呗”。佛教徒举行讲经等宗教仪式时依调引声咏唱偈颂赞叹佛或菩萨的短歌。

It refers to a verse for recitation or chanting. Among the spoken and sung literary works of Dunhuang, it usually occurs in a five-character or seven-character sentence pattern, with a theme of extolling certain figures. As a style of Buddhist scripture, also known in Chinese as Bai or Fan Bai (literally, “Brahma chant”), it is sung to a certain tune by Buddhist followers during religious rituals including sutra chanting in praise of the Buddha or various Bodhisattvas.
