Mogao Cave 220: Image of a Musical Ensemble

壁画中乐舞图像。初唐绘制。北壁东方药师经变中的礼佛乐队，人数最多，乐器品种多，乐器绘制精致写实，有极高的历史价值。乐队绘于经变画下部，分两列相对坐于四块地毯上，左边十五人，右边十三人，共绘乐器二十六件，其中弹弦乐器三件，吹奏乐器十件，打击乐器十三件。两列乐队中间有舞伎四人。

The picture, painted in the early Tang Dynasty, is a mural presentation of music and dance. Painted on the north wall of the cave, the picture shows a Buddha worshipping orchestra in the sutra illustration painting of the Eastern Medicine Buddha. It is of great historical value with its large number of people, huge variety of instruments, and fine realistic technique. Presented in the lower part of the sutra illustration painting, the orchestra is divided into two rows facing each other on four carpets, with fifteen people on the left and thirteen on the right. Also shown in the orchestra are twenty-six musical instruments, among which three are stringed instruments, ten are wind instruments and thirteen are percussion instruments. Between the two rows are four dancers.
