韦编三绝wéi biān sān jué孔子晚年很爱读《周易》,翻来覆去地读,使穿连《周易》竹简的皮条断了好几次(见于《史记·孔子世家》)。后来用‘韦编三绝’形容读书勤奋。{According to Records of the Historian·Hereditary House of Confucius, in his old age Confucius was fond of reading The Book of Changes, which was inscribed on bamboo slips held together with a leather cord, and because of his repeated turning of the pages, the leather cord broke three times. ‘The leather cord breaks three times’, the phrase derived from the story, later became a figurative term of speech to mean ‘be diligent in one's studies’.} |
