膝下xīxià儿女幼时常在父母跟前,因此旧时表示有无儿女,常说‘膝下怎样怎样’;给父母或祖父母写信时,也在开头的称呼下面加‘膝下’两字{phrase derived from the old custom in which young children were oft. present at their parents' knees, now used in saying whether one has children or not. The phrase is also used in the salutations of letters to one's parents or grandparent}:
