脱颖而出tuō yǐng ér chū战国时代,秦兵攻打赵国。赵国平原君奉命到楚国求救,要选二十名文武双全的门客一起去,但缺一人,毛遂自动请求跟着去。平原君说,贤能的人在众人当中就像锥子放在布袋里,尖ㄦ立刻就会露出来,你来我门下已经三年,没听到过对你的赞扬,你没什么能耐,不去吧!毛遂说,假使我毛遂早能像锥子放在布袋里似的,‘乃脱颖而出,非特其末见而已’,就是说,连锥子上部的环ㄦ也会露出来的,岂止光露个尖ㄦ!(见于《史记·平原君列传》)后来用‘脱颖而出’比喻人的才能全部显示出来。{According to Records of the Historian·Biography of Lord Pingyuan, when the Qin troops attacked the State of Zhao during the Warring States Period, Lord Pingyuan of Zhao received orders to ask the State of Chu for help. He wanted to take with him an entourage of 20 men well-versed in civil and military affairs, but could find only 19 from his retinue. A retainer by the name of Mao Sui volunteered to join in. Lord Pingyuan said to him, ‘A man of talent can be spotted easily among the people, like an awl whose point is immediately exposed once it is put into a cloth bag. As I have never heard anyone praise you since you joined me three years ago, it seems you are not capable. You shan't go!’ Mao Sui replied, ‘If I were the awl placed into the cloth bag, then not only the point, but the ring on it as well, would long be shining forth!’ (fig.) show one's talent fully}(颖{ying}:
