矛盾máodùn 1.矛和盾是古代两种作用不同的武器。古代故事传说,有一个人卖矛和盾,夸他的盾最坚固,什么东西也戳不破;又夸他的矛最锐利,什么东西都能刺进去。旁人问他,‘拿你的矛来刺你的盾怎么样?’那人没法回答了(见于《韩非子·难一》)。后来‘矛盾’连举,比喻言语行为自相抵触{Spear and shield were weapons of ancient times with different functions. According to Hanfeizi·Rebuttals: A man peddling spears and shields was touting his wares, saying that his shields were utterly impregnable and that his spears could pierce anything in the world. He was, however, speechless when someone asked him what would happen if one of his spears was used against one of his shields.
