白话2báihuà指现代汉语(普通话)的书面形式。它是唐宋以来在口语的基础上形成的,起初只用于通俗文学作品,到五四运动以后才在社会上普遍应用{vernacular; written form of modern Chinese (putonghua), developed from the spoken language since the Tang and Song dynasties. First used only in popular literature, it later became the principal form of language after the May 4th Movement of 1919}:
