1.表示解释和分类 indicating explanation or classification：他～工人 Tā shì gōngrén. He is a worker./ 这朵花～红的 Zhè duǒ huār shì hóng de. This flower is red.
2.表示存在 indicating existence：满身～汗 mǎnshēng shì hàn be sweating all over/ 山上全～树 Shān shɑng quán shì shù. The mountain is all covered with trees.
3.表示承认所说的，再转入正意 indicating concession of what has been said and a turn in meaning：东西旧～旧，可是还能用 Dōngxi jiù shì jiù，kěshì hái néng yòng. It is old indeed, but it is still useful./ 话～说得很对，可是得(děi)认真去做 Huà shì shuō de hěn duì，kěshì děi rènzhēn qù zuò. What you have said is right, but you've got to do it seriously.
4.表示适合 indicating appropriateness：来的～时候 lái de shì shíhou have come at an appropriate time/ 放的～地方 fàng de shì dìfɑng have put it in the right place
5.表示凡是，任何 any：～重活儿他都抢着干 Shì zhònghuór tā dōu qiǎngzhe gàn. He will vie with others in doing any difficult work.
6.用于问句 used in interrogative sentences：你～坐轮船～坐火车？ Nǐ shì zuò lúnchuán shì zuò huǒchē? Are you going by ship or by train?
7.加重语气 used for emphasis：～谁告诉你的？ Shì shéi gàosu nǐ de? Who on earth told you so?/ 天气～冷 tiānqì shì lěng It is cold indeed.
8.对，合理，跟“非”相反 right; correct, antonym of "fēi"：懂得～非 dǒngde shìfēi know what is right and what is wrong/ 他说的～ tā shuō de shì.
