1.连接同类的词或句子 and; as well as (used to connect words or sentences of the same kind) 1.顺接 connecting an adverbial element to a verb：通过实践～发现真理，又通过实践～证实真理和发展真理 Tōngguò shíjiàn ér fāxiàn zhēnlǐ, yòu tōnguò shíjiàn ér zhèngshí zhēnlǐ hé fāzhǎn zhēnlǐ. discover the truth through practice and verify and develop the truth through practice 2.转接 and yet; but：有其名～无其实 yǒu qí míng ér wú qí shí in name but not in realitys ［而已 -yǐ］助词，罢了 aux. that is all; nothing more：不过如此～～ bùguò rúcǐ éryǐ That's all there is to it. ［而且 -qiě］连词 conj. 1.表示平列 and also：这些机器我们都能开，～～还能修理 Zhèxiē jīqì wǒmen dōu néng kāi, érqiě hái néng xiūlǐ. All of us can run these machines and we can repair them as well./ 文章写得长～～空，群众见了就摇头 Wénzhāng xiě de cháng érqiě kōng, qúnzhòng jiànle jiù yáotóu. The article is long-winded and lacks contents, so that when people read it, they will shake their heads with disapproval. 2.表示进一层，常跟“不但”相应 but also, often used correspondingly with bùdàn：鲁迅不但是伟大的文学家，～～是伟大的思想家和革命家 Lǔ Xùn bùdàn shì wěidà de wénxuéjiā, érqiě shì wěidà de sīxiǎngjiā hé gémìngjiā. Lu Xun was not only a great writer, but also a great thinker and revolutionary.
2.把表时间或情状的词连接到动词上 connecting an adverbial element to a verb：匆匆～来 cōngcōng ér lái come in a hurry/ 侃侃～谈 kǎnkǎn'értán speak with fervour and assurance/ 挺身～出 tǐng-shēn'érchū step forward bravely; come out boldly
