1.因由，原因 reason; cause ( comb. -故 -gù、-由 -yóu reason)：无～无故 wúyuán-wúgù with no reason or cause/ 没有～由 méiyǒu yuányóu without any reason
2.过去宿命论者指人与人的遇合或结成关系的原因 (of fatalist) a cause that will predestine the relationship：姻～ yīnyuán the happy fate which brings lovers together/ 有～相见 yǒu yuán xiāngjiàn have the lot to meet each other
3.沿，顺着 along：～流而上 yuán liú ér shàng go upward along the river/ ～木求鱼（喻必然得不到） yuánmù-qiúyú climb a tree to catch fish (fig. a fruitless approach)
4.边 edge; fringe ( comb. 边- biān- edge)
