1.落叶灌木，叶子有长柄，掌状分裂，花小，蓝紫色，枝条可用来编筐、篮等。古时用荆条做刑具 chaste tree, a deciduous tree with long-stemmed, palm-shaped leaves, and small bluish-purple flowers. Its twigs can be used in making baskets, and is a tool of punishment in former times：负～请罪（向人认错） fùjīng-qǐngzuì proffer a birch and ask for a flogging (fig. offer a humble apology) ［荆棘 -jí］泛指丛生多刺的灌木 a general name for thorny undergrowth fig. 障碍和困难 obstacles and difficulties
