1.输，失利，跟“胜”相反 antonym of "shèng": be defeated; fail：一～涂地 yībài-túdì suffer a crushing defeat; be defeated completely/ 敌军～了 Díjūn bài le. The enemy were defeated.
2.打败，使失败 beat; cause to fail：人民军队大～侵略军 Rénmín jūnduì dàbài qīn-lüèjūn. The people's army gave the aggressors' troops a fatal blow.
3.做事没有达到目的，不成功 fail; do not succeed：功～垂成 gōngbàichuíchéng fail on the verge of success
4.败坏，毁坏 ruin; spoil：～血症 bàixuèzhèng septicaemia/ 身～名裂 shēnbài-míngliè lose all standing and reputation
