1.从表面到底或从外面到里面距离大的，跟“浅”相反 deep, antonym of "qiǎn"：～水 shēnshuǐ deep water/ ～山 shēnshān remote mountains/ 这条河很～ Zhè tiáo hé hěn shēn. This river is very deep./ 这个院子很～ Zhège yuànzi hěn shēn. This yard is very deep. ［深浅 -qiǎn］1.深度 depth 2.说话的分寸 proper limits (of speech or action); sense of propriety：他说话不知道～～ Tā shuōhuà bù zhīdào shēnqiǎn. He speaks without thought and often inappropriately.
2.从表面到底的距离 depth; length from the top of sth. to its bottom：这口井两丈～ Zhè kǒu jǐng liǎng zhàng shēn. This well is two-zhang deep.
3.久，时间长 long (in time)：～夜 shēnyè late at night; in the small hours of the morning/ ～更半夜 shēngēng-bànyè at dead of night; in the depth of night/ 年～日久 niánshēn-rìjiǔ with the passage of time; as the years go by
4.程度高的 (of level) high：～信 shēnxìn be deeply convinced; firmly believe/ ～知 shēnzhī have a thorough understanding of/ ～谋远虑 shēnmóu-yuǎnlǜ think deeply and plan carefully; be circumspect and far-sighted/ 情谊很～ qíngyì hěn shēn deep friendly feelings/ 这本书内容太～ Zhè běn shū nèiróng tàishēn. This book is too difficult./ 讲理论应该～入浅出 Jiǎng lǐlùn yīnggāi shēnrù-qiǎnchū. One should explain the profound theories in simple words when giving lecture.
