1.姓。古代姓和氏有区别，氏从姓分出，后来姓和氏不分了，姓、氏可以混用 surname；clan name. In ancient times, surname differed from clan name; the latter separated from the former, then there was no diffenence between them and always used in the same meaning. ［氏族 -zú］原始社会中由血统关系联系起来的人的集体，集体占有生产资料，集体生产，集体消费 clan, a group of families, all originally descended from one family in primitive society, applying collective ownership, collective productive labour and collective consumption
2.旧习惯对已婚的妇女，通常在夫姓后再加父姓，父姓后加“氏”，作为称呼 an early form of address for a married woman, usu. used after her husband's surname and her own surname：张王～（夫姓张，父姓王） Zhāng-Wáng shì Mrs Zhang, (the woman's husband's surname is Zhang and her father's surname is Wang)
3.后世对有影响的人的称呼 In later ages,it became a title used after the name of an influential person：神农～ Shénnóngshì Master Shen Nong/ 太史～ tàishǐshì Master Tai Shi/ 摄～表 Shèshìbiǎo Celsius thermometer zhī |
