1.功劳，贡献较大的成绩 merit; meritorious service：记大～一次 jì dàgōng yī cì award sb a Citation for Merit (First Class)/ 立～ lìgōng do a deed of merit ［功臣 -chén］封建时代指为皇帝效劳有功的官吏，现在指对某项事业有特殊功劳的人 (in feudal society) an official who did a deed of merit for the emperor; now referring to a person who has rendered outstanding service to a certain cause
2.功夫 effort; work：用～ yònggōng put in efforts/ 下苦～ xià kǔgōng put in painstaking efforts
